Page 17 of 17 Conclusion
The goals of these tests were to skirt the controversial nature of determining relative biodegradabilities, and to determine which BBs afford the least tradeoff in accuracy on the field for the added benefit of biodegradability. It would appear that the Excel Biodegradable Tracers and the Bioval BBs succeed best in this regard but if operating cost is added to the mixture, the Bioval BBs hold a distinct edge at $0.00756 versus $0.01625 per BB, pushing the Bioval BBs ahead of the Excel Tracers in value. These tests however say nothing about the relative biodegradabilities of the BBs for which results are difficult to obtain. The UBBs do appear to be the most sensitive to photodegradation as evidenced by the unique nature of its packaging, and photodegradation of plastics generally occurs quite rapidly in direct sunlight, supporting the claimed 4 to 6 week time frame of degradation for the UBBs. If complete and rapid biodegradability is the primary concern above all others, the UBBs become the preferred choice.
