Page 3 of 17 Candidate 2: Deepfire Titanium Piston (Single)
Relative newcomer Deepfire took a different approach to the construction of a reinforced piston, opting to use nylon instead of polycarbonate. Nylon is a softer material than polycarbonate, but offers more toughness and resistance to fracture. Deepfire also decided to coat their metal teeth with a layer of titanium nitride, a well known technique to increase surface hardness and lubricity thereby reducing wear. Cursory examination of the Deepfire piston shows almost no visible molding lines and very high molding quality. The coated metal teeth appeared rough both to the eye and to the touch.
Piston: Deepfire Titanium Piston (single tooth) Weight: 0.5oz Piston Material: nylon Metal Teeth: 1 Average Barcol Hardness (piston): ~3* Average Barcol Hardness (tooth): 85.1 Tapered Lip: yes Distinguishing Feature: titanium coated tooth
*Note: the Barcol Impressor registered a starting hardness of ~3, but progressed to a zero reading shortly thereafter | |
The tapered lip in the piston barrel is clearly visible here, as well as the rough texture of the coated metal tooth.
