While not directly airsoft related, Toshiba's upcoming battery cells may prove to be the next leap for our power systems. The SCiB, or Super Charge ion Battery, offers significant improvements over all existing battery technologies that we currently use. Unlike most Lithium ion and polymer cells, the SCiB is resistant to internal shorting and thermal runaway. Its less than 10% capacity loss after 3,000 cycles is quite incredible as well. The SCiB can also be rapidly charged (up to 50 Amps) to 90% capacity in less than 5 minutes. As such, its double layer capacitor like input-output performance is suitable for high power applications. Last but not least, the SCiB operates under extreme temperatures (down to -30C) unlike the current generation of rechargeable batteries.
The first SCiB cells will have a voltage of 2.4V, capacity of 4.2Ah, and dimensions of 62x95x13mm, and weighs roughly 150g. Here's hoping that it will be able to deliver on all the claims. The full press release can be found here.
